When you first dream about your wedding, I bet you imagine how your photos will look—those moments, just the two of you, full of emotion. Maybe you already have a photographer in mind, or maybe a little flutter of doubt creeps in—will they really get your style? Will they capture what matters most to you both?
There are so many incredible photographers out there—and just like your dress, your venue, and your partner, it’s all about finding the perfect fit. I know how easy it is to get lost down a Google rabbit hole—before you know it, you’re clicking endless links and, let’s be honest, YouTube might steal you for hours!
So, to help you cut through the noise, I’ve put together my top 10 questions every couple should ask their wedding photographer. Think of this as your personal guide to making sure you find ‘The One.’
1. Can we see a full gallery from a wedding—start to finish?
If you ask just one question, make it this one! You’ll want to see a full wedding gallery—not just highlight reels—to get a sense of how your photographer captures every part of the day. Weddings evolve—so you need to know they can handle each part, from the vows to the dancing. Bonus points if they have weddings at venues similar to yours—lighting and mood make all the difference.
2. Do you have backup equipment?
You don’t need the most expensive gear, but you need peace of mind. Your photographer should have backup cameras, lenses, flashes, memory cards—everything, just in case. Trust me, you don’t want any gaps in your coverage!
3. Will you be the one photographing our day?
Some photographers have a whole team, but if you fell in love with a particular photographer’s work, make sure it’s them who will be there on your day. It’s all about that connection—so don’t be shy in asking!
4. Can we see the wedding contract?
This is a big one! If a photographer doesn’t have a contract, run! A solid contract protects both of you—outlining services, what happens if things change, or even if there’s an emergency. Read it thoroughly—if anything is unclear, ask until you feel confident.
5. If we run late, will you stay longer? What are the extra costs?
Life happens—if the timeline shifts, make sure you know in advance how much extra time costs and how it’s billed, so you never feel caught off guard.
6. How soon will we see our photos?
Every photographer works at their own pace. You’ll often get a few sneak peeks within days, but editing might take anywhere from a couple of weeks to a few months—especially during peak season. Just ask for an estimated timeline so you can set expectations.
7. What if you’re sick on our wedding day?
The best photographers have a plan B. Illness, emergencies—life happens. Make sure they have a trusted network of fellow photographers who can step in, and know what happens if they need to cancel—will they help you find a replacement or refund you? Get that clarity upfront.
8. What rights do we have to our photos?
Your photos are yours, but most photographers keep copyright. They usually allow personal use—printing, sharing on socials—but not commercial use. If you have concerns about privacy or public sharing, ask them directly.
9. How do you keep our photos safe?
A pro will back up your photos in multiple places—two memory cards in-camera, plus additional backups at home. Ask how they protect your images
10. Do you have insurance?
This one’s crucial! A professional business should absolutely have insurance—both for their gear (in case of theft) and liability (what if a guest trips over a tripod?). Some venues even require public liability insurance, so make sure your photographer has that covered.
Here’s your bonus tip: if you’re feeling torn between a few photographers, take a step back and ask yourselves: how much does photography mean to you in your wedding plans? If it’s a top priority, make sure your budget reflects that. Think about what you want your photos to express—your venue, your love, those spontaneous giggles. And don’t forget to trust your gut—if you feel at home with your photographer, that comfort will shine through in your images.
